Network momentum

From the desk of Frank Hernandez, Network President for 2010

As the new president of The Minnesota Network of Latinos in Higher Education (MNLHE), I am pleased to announce that the new executive committee has met and have set forth an ambitious agenda for this coming year.  Our focus will be on supporting our members by improving three areas of the network.

First, we are committed to improving the annual Summit of the network. Based on the feedback from the 2009 Summit attendees, we are already identifying ways to increase attendance, improve communication, double our institutional memberships, invite more state and national scholars to attend, and provide more time for regions to set goals based on their regional needs.  Be sure to visit this Website and facebook page to learn which institution will be hosting the annual summit 2010!

Second, our hope is to continue to find creative and effective ways to communicate with the network. We are looking at ways to improve the MNLHE website so that it is easier to navigate and so that it highlights news about what you and your colleagues are doing in and around Minnesota.  Additionally, we are very encouraged that so many of you
have added the Network to your facebook friends. Please use our Facebook wall.  Using facebook to communicate has been very successful at connecting Latino students, staff, faculty, and administrators with events occurring across Minnesota. Finally, our hope is to continue to post related articles about Latinos in higher education and to read your postings about what's happening across Minnesota in and around your campuses.

The third area that the executive committee will focus on this year is finding ways to improve Latino experiences at Minnesota's colleges and universities. We will revisit the "Campus Action Model for Building a Latino Supportive Campus"  (the Latino Tool Kit) and highlight what some institutions are doing to support, recruit, retain, and graduate its Latino students. Look forward to getting information about how you can get involve in supporting this initiative.

I look forward to having a productive year as your president.  We need your input and knowledge about how to improve the Network. Please do not hesitate to contact me with questions and comments.

Stay in touch,
Frank Hernandez
